Course Overview

By enrolling in this course, students will acquire skills in timber joinery and gain a comprehensive understanding of the building and construction sector. You will learn to create joinery components, operate computer-controlled machinery, manufacture parts for door and window frames, install windows and doors, build and assemble stairs, and apply and trim decorative finishes. Job opportunities for Joiners are expected to remain high through November 2019.

Upon completion, graduates will be qualified tradespeople in the building and construction industry. Graduates will develop expertise in various aspects of joinery, including:

  • Designing and setting out stairs.
  • Refurbishing timber sashes for window frames.
  • Setting up and assembling cabinets, showcases, wall units, counters, and workstations.
  • Installing linings, paneling, and moldings.
  • Manufacturing joinery components.
  • Reading and interpreting plans and specifications.
  • Operating computer-controlled machinery.
  • Creating components for door and window frames.

Common joinery tasks include:

  • Making doors and window frames.
  • Creating custom-fitted furniture.
  • Building stairs.

Typical carpentry duties include:

  • Installing floors.
  • Fitting staircases.
  • Fixing window frames.
  • Installing cupboards and shelving.

Course Requirements

  1. Students must be a minimum of 18 years old.

  2. Academic requirement: Completion of Australian Year 10 or an equivalent qualification from overseas.

  3. Proof of English language proficiency is required:

    Acceptable tests include IELTS, PTE, etc. (For IELTS: 6.0 overall score, with no individual band less than 5.5; or an equivalent test score). The result must be valid within 2 years at the time of visa application.

    Some educational institutions offer an internal English placement test that can be used to fulfill the English proficiency requirement.

Exemptions apply if:

  • You are a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, or the Republic of Ireland.
  • You are enrolled in a principal course of study that is a registered school course, a standalone English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS), a course offered in a language other than English, or a registered postgraduate research course.
  • You have completed at least 5 years of study in English in one or more of the following countries: Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
