Course Overview

Metal Fabricator, Fitter and Turner, and Welder are currently featured on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

In Australia, engineering fabricators are often in higher demand than engineers themselves. Workers in structural steel and welding trades are responsible for cutting, shaping, joining, and repairing metal components for various projects, including iron and steel structures, boilers, pressure vessels, ships, and other vessels.

The Certificate III and IV in Engineering Fabrication and Trade equips students to carry out a broad range of tasks in the construction and manufacturing sectors. Graduates will gain expertise in numerous aspects of engineering fabrication and trade, including:

  • Interpreting blueprints, drawings, and specifications to identify job requirements.
  • Selecting, preparing, and cleaning metal stock.
  • Cutting metal sections and shapes based on markings using hand tools, flame cutting torches, and metal cutting machines.
  • Shaping and bending metal sections and pipes with hand and machine tools, or by heating and hammering.
  • Aligning parts for joining using hand tools and measuring instruments.
  • Joining metal sections with various welding techniques, bolting, and riveting.
  • Inspecting welds for bead width, penetration, and accuracy.
  • Finalizing products by cleaning, polishing, filing, and treating them in acidic solutions.
  • Smoothing and cleaning welds through filing, chiselling, and grinding.
